"A fifth column is a group of people who clandestinely undermine a larger group, such as a nation, from within. A fifth column can be a group of secret sympathizers of an enemy that are involved in sabotage within military defense lines, or a country's borders. A key tactic of the fifth column is the secret introduction of supporters into the whole fabric of the entity under attack. This clandestine infiltration is especially effective with positions concerning national policy and defense. From influential positions like these, fifth column tactics can be effectively utilized, from stoking fears through misinformation campaigns, to traditional techniques like espionage." - Wikipedia

Evidently, there is a *fifth column* in the Libraries profession. Are they involved in sabotage? Yes. Do they introduce supporters into the entity under attack? Yes. Do they influence national policy? Yes. Do they stoke fears through misinformationation campaigns? YES.

Are these individuals given more media coverage than public librarians who defend the value of the physical book? They are. And their dictatorial attitude is ruining public libraries - in direct opposition to what the public (for whom the service exists) is crying out for on a daily basis.

Has the 'Library Science' discipline done for public libraries what the 'Accredited Nursing Degree' has done for nursing - providing opportunities for those who aspire to a PhD - whilst totally ignoring the end-user who relies on their good sense ?

Nurses are now told they must "retrain" - to give them the most basic skills. There are calls for their "mindset" to be changed. "Hooray" says the patient lying unattended in his bed.

Who will change the "mindset" of the fifth columnists in the Libraries world? That such people exist and have the audacity to rubbish the core ethos of librariesl makes me extremely angry.
