In reply to <a href="https://www.publiclibrariesnews.com/2013/01/an-entirely-insane-week-for-public-libraries.html#comment-5647">Alisha</a>.

Hi Alisha, thanks for your comment. I summarise what is reported and would be very happy to put the other side of the picture as well. I would be absolutely fine to put the "pro" side as well but the coverage I see is mainly "con". I believe I have mentioned this to the owner of Eco Computer Systems who I have no problems with. It's good to hear that your placement went well. Was it the workfare scheme that you were on?

Public Libraries News does not offer work experience as it is a purely - ironically, I guess - voluntary affair. I produce entirely in the time I have after doing my full-time librarian job and the family.

I'm sure your company, Public Libraries News allows people to work with you for work experience, am I right? So if other companies incorporate this, why is there a problem? . As for the "forced" work, people are not forced to work at Eco Computer Systems. I am a placement there and once I read this, I felt I had to defend their name . I was put into a department I felt would help me progress to get a job and that I was happy to be in.

Why is it so difficult to acknowledge the good that has been done? The jobs volunteers have been given, free training for the unemployed and elderly, saving Lewisham's libraries and looking after our environment? Think about that.

A query on your comment "at least in Camden where the move to volunteers resulted in a collapse in usage". The significant reduction in usage is in the big Camden libraries - so the cause surely can't be volunteers.
