Surely even putting aside The Library Act and the fact that all of us are paying a proportion of our rates specifically for the provision of an adequate, comprehensive and free service there is a real issue of data protection involved in allowing volunteers to do anything other than run non computer based activities. ie coffee mornings, PC advice. Children's activities are ill advised points of contact for non paid staff and any other 'jobs' need either computer access or regular repeated reliable attendance - no casul days off - no long holidays - no Saturdays off etc. So in my opinion - and also that of my colleagues, volunteers may be of some small use but may actually be a hindrance for those of us trying to actually get on with the business in hand,,,,
