Bury Council ( Lancs) took the decision last Summer to reduce the floor space of our Central Library by more than half to allow for a brand new Sculpture Centre to move in. The number of service users for this Central Library is 25,869 and in indeed very central to the borough, near the bus and metrolink stations. Two thirds of the books have gone and you could not swing a cat in the cramped reading area. People are very angry at what's happened.

The option to reduce the floor space of the Central Library was never mentioned as an option in the Library Review consultation questionnaire but £75,000 of tax payers money was quickly approved by the (Labour) Council to refurbish the vacant floor space for a would-be Sculpture Centre.

Over 2500 residents and library users signed the "Save Bury Library" petition against the plan, but whilst being " listened to", the Council would not be persuaded of the errors of their ways.

A Reinstated Bury Central Library committee is now studying positive developments in Lincolnshire.
