The Danish story shows how making simple decisions about technology - like agreeing a national data model for RFID - at a national level not only benefits library users - who now have a truly national service, but also the libraries - who have made an investment that has durability. So long as the UK fails to recognise the need for a national agency (with real powers) the library service will continue to suffer from poor or no co-ordination and unwise investments.
It also shows the potential of RFID to improve and enhance services of course! :-)

Promoting the library outside of the library service is key; for my small part in the Enquire/Ask A Librarian site I have my own hoodies I wear when I am out (when users are already in the library you have them) to the supermarket; the pub; the local auctions. I also have a magnetic small poster on my car...all were cheap. For sustainability reasons Enquire is now restricted to subscribing authorities members only and my local authority does not participate. However, this personal mobile promotion was really effective in seeing usage there used to be one or two hits at a weekend if I was out and about; not much you say...but I am just one person. Wearing something - a top, sticker on a bag is almost as good as word of mouth and that w-o-m advertising is worth 10 posters or table tents....and it is 'free'...
