Downwardly mobile?
Aug 5th
Editorial
Mobile libraries are not having a good time of it at the moment: my records show Bromley’s decision to close it’s sole vehicle is the eighth mobile library gone since April: while only two static libraries have gone the same way. One of the reasons of course is that it’s one thing to get volunteers to run a static library but a whole other thing for them to maintain a vehicle, find drivers and pay the insurances. Mind you, of course, perhaps Bromley is missing a trick as there may be money in mobiles: Cambridgeshire certainly hope so as they have started offering advertising on them. That advertising idea is just one of seven I’ve spotted for this post: the large number due to a SCL report on digital skills that includes some interesting case studies.
Changes
- Bromley – Mobile library service (1 of 1) to be closed from September.
- Manchester – Fallowfield Library renamed “The Place” and transferred to Friends of Fallowfield Library and City South housing association.
- Peterborough – Consultation on library usage, preparatory to reduction to library services budget.
Ideas
- Advertising on back of mobile libraries – Cambridgeshire offer space for £200 per month.
- Digital career days – Gateshead runs them with software and computer hardware companies.
- Photospheres – Such as this one in Essex.
- Promote library online/digital offer in community fairs – Lewisham shows off Oculus Rift etc.
- Publicise heavy users – Suffolk publicise two children, one of which – and eight year old boy – has loaned 1200 books,
- Technocamps – Neath Port Talbot – The activities enable children aged 7 to 11 to develop their enthusiasm for STEM skills by learning computer coding and creating projects using LEGO’s Mindstorm robots.
- Toy hire – Charge for as many toys as wanted for three weeks.
Things to do in Kilmarnock, and in your library, before you die
Aug 3rd
Editorial
Last week I was mostly in Scotland doing geocaching – including a nice one in the grounds of the Dick Institute library in Kilmarnock by the way – so you’re getting a whole week’s news in one (well, not quite all – there’ll be more catch-up at the next post). There’s the usual depressing news from England (sorry, don’t blame me, blame the Austerity) but also some interesting news from other places, including from a very successful Dutch library that shows doing things differently (and having some investment) can make a huge difference. By the way, do please nominate your favourite library for the “1001 libraries to see before you die” project at IFLA. My favourite has to be Liverpool Central Library for the reasons I explore here, what’s yours?
Changes
- Bath and Northeast Somerset – Radstock Library to move into a room in Radco.
- Cornwall – 5 out of 6 mobile libraries to close (previously was all).
- Hampshire – Emsworth Library may move into community centre away from the town centre.
- Kent – £450k refurbishment of Dartford Library after consultation, possibly including an independent living centre.
- Leeds – Consultation over reduction of opening hours (15% average, with some cut by as much as 40%).
- Sheffield – 2 out of 2 mobile libraries withdrawn.
Ideas
- Crowdfunding for children’s library “story time nook”.
- Personal “shop” area for each customer group type
- Remove Dewey, shelve by subject: put fiction and non-fiction together for each customer type.
- Seats 2 Meet – connect library users in real time..
- Seed libraries – but make sure the Department of Agriculture is OK with it.
