CILIP are heavily involved in campaigning, promotion & advocacy for public libraries with professional staff. However, neither CILIP nor librarians themselves have any direct influence on the funding (or rather lack of it) which ultimately drives cuts & closures. Rather the decision making power rests with the Local Authority, i.e. the councillors themselves.

I think Hazel’s questions are good ones. Perhaps someone from CILIP could do a piece for PLN answering the points she raises.

i’m pretty sick of retired librarians who gleefully offer to volunteer in community libraries and constantly proclaim what a good ‘job’ they are doing. I would rather they campaigned for a political change.

I can’t really take a comment seriously where the “moaner” themselves is unable to even enter their own name correctly. Perhaps when you’ve finished being self-righteous, ask an information professional to guide you towards basic website use and compassion/empathy courses?

Well said. You’d think the library staff made redundant would leap at the chance to go their old jobs for no reward. It’s all take, take, take with these people.

Local authorities are going to close more libraries rather than cut funding for roads, social care etc. Where is the innovative vision from CILIP and other professionals proposing a remedy? As a reluctant volunteer who still believes all libraries should be funded by local authorities and staffed by paid professionals but who recognises that this is just not going to continue, I’m sick of those professionals moaning and blaming volunteers without offering any alternatives. Where is the sustainable plan for an alternative to community-run libraries? Where is the leadership from professionals?
