Re the Kent councillor and his/her proposal re the books of Rolf Harris. The councillor may make the proposal but the chief librarian of that local authority has the responsibility of making major decisions about library book stock, NOT the councillor. If the chief librarian acquiesces with the councillor's proposal then he/she could be accused of professional misconduct, Many public libraries stock, or have stocked, Adolf Hitler's book. They also stock books by a certain Mr Archer, a once well known conservative politician and convicted criminal. The principle here is not about crime, or the level of crime.

Why don't you ask CILIP what they would do if a chief librarian acquiesced with a politician's interfering proposals re book stock? That one should be easy, even for them.

The book removal move is an uncomfortable one. I seem to remember the Aussies moving Lance Armstrongs books into the fiction section!

As for convicted, while there is a natural revulsion at their crimes, I personally feel we should not censor their works. The library is not making the work available to cause offence. On the same note, Mein Kampf should be available as an important historical document....
