Polite, conventional protest isn't winning the day. It's time library users tried more obvious and awkward ways of asserting their right to a comprehensive and efficient library service for all who wish to use it. Here's an idea to start the ball rolling.

London cabbies have a long and honourable tradition of involvement in charity work. Now if thousands of London's less well off people are to find it almost impossible to get to a fully stocked library when it's open, how about a cavalcade of black cabs taking them (free of charge) to their nearest libraries? If the number of taxis were large enough during the libraries' restricted opening hours, it should create a nice amount of traffic congestion - especially if the cabs all waited outside the libraries till their passengers were ready to go home. It might even make some politicians wonder if their current plans really represented more efficient use of resources.

Anyone like to think up some really creative alternative stunts?
