Public Library Petitions noted

A petition is often a key factor in the campaigning to keep a library, or libraries, open.  Here is a non-exhaustive list of ones I have noted.  This page started 9th November 2013.  Lincolnshire is the largest petition noted so far in this parliament, with Wirral being the largest in the parliament before:

• Barnet – 9000 (March 2015).
• Bath – 5000+.
• Bristol – 811 (October 2013). 8 year old boy collects 450 signatures (June 2015).
• Brent – 6,000 (March 2011).
• Bury – 2995 (December 2013).
• Cornwall – 1500 for St Just Library (March 2014) to keep existing opening hours. NB, St Just only has a population of 4690. There was also a campaign by 10 year old boy to stop opening hours cut at Falmouth (July 2014) which culminated in a 5500 petition being handed to the council in September 2014.
• Devon – 500 for Kingskerswell, Devon.
• Doncaster – 500 (2012).
• Fife – 4000 (July 2015). 2000 (October 2015)
• Harrow – 2500 (Jan 2015). 5000 (June 2015).
• Herefordshire –9,411 (May 2013), 7639 (November 2015).
• Isle of Wight – 4,300 (2011)
• Kirklees – 7400 petition against moving Batley Library (later became 12,000). 2500 against cuts to Cleckheaton October 2014.
• Lambeth – 10,000 (2015)
• Lewisham – 25,000 (2010). (information received via email)
• Leicestershire – 2,000 (July 2014).
• Lincolnshire – 23,000 (October 2013).
• Luton – 10,000.
• Monmouthshire – 1,000 for Usk Library (November 2013).
• North Yorkshire – Whitby Library 1652 signatures, North Yorkshire 2183 (source: email from campaigner, February 2015)
• Sheffield – 5000 for two libraries (December 2013). 30,000 (February 2014)
• Somerset – 19,500 (February 2012).
• Southampton – Two separate ones of 500 each for two libraries feared under threat (March 2014).
• Southend – 6,000 (2013).
• Staffordshire – 1440 for one library (September 2014). 8000 for the county (December 2014). 6300 name petition over suggested move of Lichfield Library (April 2016).
• Surrey – 2428 (February 2012).
• Trafford – 1770 solely for Hale Library (March 2015).
• Vale of Glamorgan – 1855 (December 2013). Over 2000 (March 2015).
• Walsall – 3,000 (January 2016).
• Warrington – 10711 (October 2016).
• Wirral – 60,000 (June 2009).
