Wigan says only 2 out of 16 libraries safe: Redbridge announce 5 closures.
263 libraries plus 17 mobiles currently under threat or recently closed.
Wigan has put out a public consultation that says only 2 of its 17 libraries are safe from closure. It is unlikely Wigan will close all of these but it is possible so the figure stands as 15 out of 17 under threat. I had previously put the figure for Wigan as 6 so the total has increased by nine. The London borough of Redbridge has announced five of its 12 libraries, relocating a sixth.

Hi Ian – thanks for collating all this information. I am a member of Friends of Gloucestershire Libraries. Just to clarify the figures on cuts/closures here:
11 will have their funding withdrawn completely, so will close unless run and funded by voluntary groups.
A further 7 will close unless they can arrange to share premises and running costs with a ‘partner’. Even then opening hours and stock will likely be reduced, and there will be minimal staffing with an emphasis on self-service machines.
A further 11 will have their opening hours reduced to 3.5 days a week.
All 5 mobile libraries will also be taken off the road, as well as the ‘homelink’ service which visits the housebound and care homes.
All this will recoup the Council just 2% of the amount it says it needs to save overall.
